Sometimes, setting in class as a 1L, I am amazed by my present circumstances. Today was such a day. During our discussion of adverse possession we were discussing continuity of ownership and it hit me. I am actually going to use this some day. I am going to talk like this. I am going to engage in these discussions. I am going to do something productive with this knowledge. This is a feeling I have not previously had in my educational endeavors. Perhaps this is because I majored in history for my undergrad. I, however, assume a lot of people have felt the same. How many degrees really prepare you for work in ANY field? My friends with Psychology, History, English, and most with “hard” science degrees as well all have to get another degree (concurrently in education or a graduate degree) before they can actually use their education directly in their field. For example: to write on the conquests of Alexander the Great or the Works of Shakespeare you need a PHD to be considered credible. To use my degree I have had to go on as a candidate for JD in 2007. I am not trying to say that undergrad degrees are worthless, or that the learning is meaningless. I had to have one to be here. I DO hope that my readers all get to enjoy this feeling I have now. I can’t tell you what it feels like, you will know when you experience it.
